‘Sixer Sidhu’ began his political career as BJP candidate with a giant killing in 2004, defeating Congress heavyweight, six-time MP and former minister of state Raghunandan Lal Bhatia. This time, he played a key role in finishing the political career of Capt Amarinder Singh, who resigned as CM in September 2021 and quit Congress in November. However, six months on, Sidhu himself has also lost the game.
The Punjab Congress president faced sharpest attacks from SAD, AAP, BJP and Amarinder. Earlier, more than Capt Amarinder, opposition parties would attack Sidhu and even on Thursday, he got more brickbats than CM Charanjit Singh Channi did. He also remained a favourite punching bag for some political commentators.
Sidhu remained an enigma for his critics and admirers, not only because of his idiosyncrasies but also for the tenacity with which he held on to a position taken, and his sulking sessions. He almost risked his career by resigning from the post of Punjab Congress president on Twitter and then refusing to relent till he managed to get the Punjab Advocate General and the DGP replaced, but he made it evident how dangerous he could be for his adversaries.
Sidhu would not even listen to most of his admirers, which isolated him more. Congress now faces another challenge, having lost the face who represented that element of change and several old-timers have already shown that they are a worn out force to face the BJP as well as the electorate wanting change.
